COMMUNITY-TOURISM INITIATIVES SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED ACROSS SAINT LUCIA.

The Hon. Dr. Ernest Hilaire, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture and Information, has unveiled a bold vision to replicate the Choiseul community tourism model across all constituencies in Saint Lucia. Speaking at the official launch of the newly upgraded Choiseul Arts and Crafts Centre, the Minister emphasized that community-driven tourism will be a cornerstone of sustainable development on the island.

“The Choiseul Arts and Crafts Centre embodies what we want every community in Saint Lucia to achieve,” said Minister Hilaire. “And there have been attempts in the past to ensure that this place becomes a viable offering in Saint Lucia, and of course it has gone from the highs to the lows. There was an attempt a few years ago to invest in uplifting the place and to create a viable experience here — one that is sustainable.”

The significantly enhanced Choiseul Arts and Crafts Centre represents an investment of approximately EC$800,000.00. The facility now features artisan studios, a meeting room, a training and exhibition area, a bar area, and administrative offices. It is also equipped with brand-new appliances and equipment to support small business development, artisan training, and cultural showcases.

The Minister highlighted that strong collaboration among key stakeholders remains essential to refining Choiseul’s full potential as a premier community tourism experience.

“This facility must be more than a building — it must be a hub of economic activity, cultural preservation, and authentic experiences,” he added.

The National Skills Development Centre (NSDC) will serve as the custodian of the Choiseul Arts and Crafts Centre. Through this partnership, NSDC will roll out comprehensive training and entrepreneurial programmes designed to build local capacity, enhance service quality, and ensure that both visitors and locals enjoy a truly memorable Choiseul experience.

This initiative aligns with the Government of Saint Lucia’s broader tourism strategy to foster inclusive, community-led development, empowering local entrepreneurs and artisans to benefit more directly from the tourism economy.
