ABOUT 17 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION HAS RECEIVED THE COMPLETE REGIMEN OF THE VACCINE.
As of Monday 27th September 2021, a total of 45,245 first doses, and 31,520 second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. This is inclusive of both the Astrazeneca and Pfizer BioNTech vaccines. 17.4% of the population have received the complete regimen of the vaccine.
Over the last month, there has been a noted increase in the uptake of the vaccines. This response is very encouraging, particularly at a time when we see reports of steady rising of COVID-19 cases and associated deaths. This demonstrates an appreciation for the health benefit of the vaccine by our citizens; as well as the need to take personal responsibility to protect self and loved ones.
As the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs strengthens its community outreach to ensure that vaccines are accessible to all, we continue to engage external partners such as the commercial sector and other health facilities to offer vaccines. COVID-19 vaccines are available at all Wellness centers on selected days. Citizens are encouraged to contact their nearest Wellness centers to access the vaccine.
COVID-19 has no respect of person, gender, age, or socio-economic status. It can affect anyone, and in different ways. We know that people with underlying chronic non-communicable diseases are particularly vulnerable to severe and fatal COVID-19 infection. A special appeal is being made to persons living with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory disease. The COVID-19 vaccines are effective in reducing risk of the severe form of the disease, hospitalization and death.
Whilst the vaccine provides protection against the severe complications of the virus, you are reminded of the healthy habits necessary for immune system boosting. These include a healthy and well-balanced diet; being well hydrated, adequate exercise and rest. A healthy immune system is necessary and further helps the vaccine to prime your body to fight the virus if you become infected.
In addition to being vaccinated, it is essential to keep practicing infection control and prevention protocols – wear your mask; keep your distance; and wash your hands regularly.
We can win this COVID-19 fight together. Let us all play our part. Vaccinate for you, for yours, for us.
Further COVID-19 vaccination updates will be provided next week.
